What happened

On the evening of May 19, two slow-moving storms dropped golf ball to baseball size hail on southwest Lubbock and around Slaton, Texas, with a few stones up to 3 inches across.1 In south Lubbock, the biggest hail, tennis ball to just over baseball size, fell in a band from near Quaker Avenue and 130th Street to Slide Avenue and 122nd Street, and quarter to golf ball size hail was common for a few miles on each side.2 Because the storms barely moved, hail kept falling for up to 15 minutes in some spots.2

NWS Lubbock said the hail damaged many vehicles, windows and buildings.1 Early estimates said about 1,200 homes might need new roofs, and that every home in the Vintage Township neighborhood would need one.2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $30 million in property damage from the south Lubbock hail.2

In northern Missouri, hail and strong winds caused structural damage.3 Near Mount Moriah in Harrison County, hail up to 2.75 inches fell late that night, and golf ball size hail broke windows.3,4
