What happened

On March 19, 2018, storms dropped a swath of large hail from northwest to southeast Cullman County, Alabama, with many reports of hail the size of tennis balls or larger.1 A stone found near Walter measured 5.38 inches across, and NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information certified it as Alabama's largest hailstone on record.1,2 Baseball-size hail in Cullman damaged vehicles, roofs and other structures, and many homes had tarps on their roofs the next day.3

An EF3 tornado with peak winds of 150 mph tracked 34.2 miles through Jacksonville in Calhoun County into Cleburne County from 8:23 to 9:12 p.m. CDT and injured 4 people.4,5 In Jacksonville it removed most of the roof and the top floor of two apartment buildings, significantly damaged several buildings on the Jacksonville State University campus, and left scores of homes uninhabitable.5

In Georgia, an EF2 tornado with 120 mph winds hit a subdivision in South Fulton between Fairburn and Campbellton at about 10:11 p.m. EST. More than 50 homes were damaged, at least half of them significantly, and in the worst-hit area many lost large sections of their roofs and upstairs walls.6 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $750,000 in property damage from the tornado and $2 million from golf ball size hail near Campbellton.6,7 Around 2:29 a.m. EDT on March 20, winds estimated at 95 to 105 mph tore large sections of roofing off 4 large industrial buildings just north of Augusta's Bush Field, and part of a masonry wall collapsed on one.8
