What happened

On the evening of Aug. 3, 2017, the most severe part of a storm complex in eastern New Mexico hit the area between Portales and Dora in Roosevelt County. Wind gusts estimated at up to 85 mph tore the roofs off several buildings about 3 miles south of Portales and damaged vehicles.1 About 4 miles south-southeast of Portales, the winds blew metal roofing several hundred feet.2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $3.4 million in wind damage at those two sites. County emergency management estimated flash flood damage in Roosevelt County at more than $2.4 million.1,2,3

The largest hail, 1.75 inches, fell near Lee in Allegan County, Michigan.4 Falling and fallen trees caused two deaths.
