What happened

On the morning of April 30, an EF2 up to 1.2 miles wide tracked 23.4 miles from west of Pickens, Mississippi, to Durant, which took a direct hit. Many buildings and homes in Durant had roof damage and a few weaker structures were destroyed. Four mobile homes were destroyed along the path, and one person was killed. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $3.5 million in damage in Holmes County.1 In Kilmichael, an EF1 with 110 mph winds damaged roofs on dozens of homes, and falling trees heavily damaged about a dozen more. The database lists $4 million in damage.2 Another EF2, with 120 mph winds, crossed Yazoo County from east of Bentonia to Interstate 55, with $2.3 million in damage listed.3

That afternoon in Boardman, Ohio, downburst winds over 70 mph tore sections of roofing off businesses on Market Street and homes just to the east. The database lists $500,000 in damage.4
