What happened

Before dawn on January 22, an EF3 tornado with peak winds near 140 mph tracked about 25 miles across Brooks, Cook and Berrien counties in south Georgia from 3:29 to 3:58 a.m. EST and killed 11 people.1 In Cook County it reduced about 35 manufactured homes in a mobile home park to rubble, and seven people died there.1,2 It removed second stories from homes in all three counties, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $2.5 million in property damage across the three counties.2,3,4

Earlier on January 21, NWS Atlanta confirmed 23 tornadoes in central Georgia, all but two rated EF0 or EF1.5 One of the two EF2s, with peak winds of 115 mph, crossed I-75 in Peach and Houston counties. It tore off all or part of the roofs of homes, blew in windows and doors, and damaged 15 to 20 homes in a mobile home park.5 In east Texas, an EF2 tornado with winds near 120 mph touched down near Scottsville in Harrison County at 4:18 p.m. CST, dropping trees on several homes and blowing away a small mobile home. NOAA lists $1 million in property damage.6

That evening, hail 1.75 to 3.5 inches across fell around Jonesville in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, between 7:21 and 7:47 p.m. CST, and tennis ball size hail fell near Taylor in Columbia County, Arkansas, at 6:05 p.m. CST.7,8
