What happened

In Albany, Georgia, straight-line winds of 80 to 85 mph cut a 3 to 4 mile swath across the northern half of the city at about 10:14 p.m. EST on January 2, 2017.1,2 NWS surveyors found minor to moderate roof damage across the city and some wide-span metal roofs heavily damaged. Much of the worst structural damage came from trees falling on buildings.1,2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $17 million in property damage in Dougherty County.1

In the Rehobeth area of Houston County, Alabama, straight-line winds on the southern edge of a tornado brought down a large tree that split a mobile home around 7:37 p.m. CST, killing 4 people.3,2 In Turner County, Georgia, 80 mph straight-line winds around 10:49 p.m. EST stripped shingles and metal roofing from mobile homes and outbuildings. One person died when the wind shifted an outbuilding off its blocks.4,2

Earlier, at about 2:47 p.m. CST, estimated 70-knot (81 mph) winds cut a corridor of damage through Gulf Shores, Alabama, blowing roofing off a few commercial buildings and damaging homes. NOAA lists $950,000 in property damage.5 At 10:30 a.m. CST, an EF1 tornado south of Ragley in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana, damaged nearly two dozen homes, mostly their roofs.6
