What happened

NWS Norman counted 12 tornadoes in central, south central and southeastern Oklahoma on the afternoon and evening of May 9, 2016.1 The strongest, an EF4 near Katie in Garvin County, destroyed several homes. One person died when it destroyed a modular home.1,2 The same storm then produced an EF3 tornado that grew to nearly a mile wide north and northwest of Sulphur in Murray County, damaging or destroying numerous houses. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $4 million in property damage for this tornado in Murray County.3 An EF3 tornado between Connerville and Bromide in Johnston County killed one person in a destroyed modular home.1,4 In Choctaw County, an EF3 tornado southwest of Boswell destroyed at least three mobile homes, damaged numerous homes and injured two people. The Storm Events Database lists $3 million in property damage for its Choctaw County segment.5 An EF1 tornado then crossed Hugo, damaging numerous homes and businesses.6

In Nebraska, hail up to 5 inches across, measured near 96th and Pine Streets, fell on the southeast side of Lincoln. It heavily damaged homes and vehicles, and stones came through the roofs and walls of some homes.7 That night, thunderstorm winds estimated at 83 knots (96 mph) hit Bowie County, Texas, from near Hooks east to Nash. Homes lost shingles, outbuildings were damaged or destroyed, and many trees were snapped or uprooted.8
