What happened

Hail 6 inches across was measured 3 miles east-southeast of Nisland in Butte County, South Dakota, at 8:20 p.m. MDT on June 19, 2015. Hail up to 4.5 inches across fell at Nisland, near Newell and near Saint Onge in Lawrence County.1 Around Nisland the hail broke windows, punched holes in the roofs of houses, barns and outbuildings, and dented vehicles left outside.1 The same storm produced an EF2 tornado near Hereford in Meade County from 8:57 to 9:27 p.m. MDT, with peak winds estimated at 118 mph along a path of about 20 miles.1

In Burleigh County, North Dakota, winds reached 90 mph that evening. In Bismarck, trees and power poles were heavily damaged east and north of downtown and some structural damage was reported. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $1 million in property damage from these winds.2 Around midnight, a line of storms with winds of 60 to over 100 mph crossed central South Dakota, hitting Jones, Lyman and Buffalo counties hardest.3 Near Okaton, Murdo and Draper in Jones County, the winds destroyed two machine sheds and blew the roof off a grain bin.3 In Fort Thompson, winds of 100 mph or more damaged or destroyed several homes and flipped campers, and one man died when his trailer home was flipped.3

Earlier, at 3:51 p.m. CST, a short EF1 tornado with peak winds near 110 mph touched down near West Frankfort in Franklin County, Illinois. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $500,000 in property damage from it.4
