What happened

Hail up to golf ball size fell on Plainview, Texas, starting at about 9:56 AM CST on May 8, and damaged homes, businesses and vehicles across the city.1 The worst damage was in newly built homes on the southwest side of Plainview, where every home would need a new roof.1 That afternoon, starting at about 1:29 PM CST, hail fell across south-central and southeast Lubbock County, reaching softball size, 4.5 inches across, in Slaton.2 Homes, businesses and vehicles were damaged from 2 miles east of Woodrow to Ransom Canyon, and strong winds in Slaton threw gravel that broke dozens of windows in cars and buildings.2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $300 million in property damage from the Plainview hail and $200 million from the Lubbock County hail.1,2

In Oklahoma, grapefruit size hail, 4 inches across, damaged homes and vehicles near Bearden in Okfuskee County at about 6:55 PM CST.3
