What happened

Hail up to 4.5 inches across fell on Abilene, Texas, at about 5:40 p.m. CDT on June 12, 2014, during an outdoor children's parade.1 Up to a dozen people were treated for injuries, about six of them parade-goers with minor head injuries from hailstones.1 Downtown Abilene and the city's east side took substantial damage, with broken windows in several downtown offices and 48 police patrol cars heavily damaged.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $404 million in property damage from the hail in Taylor County, and the National Weather Service said it may have been one of the costliest hailstorms ever to hit Abilene.2,1

At about 8:30 p.m. CDT, thunderstorm winds estimated at 83 knots (96 mph) peeled the entire metal roof off one building in Rochelle in McCulloch County and damaged at least 15 other roofs in the area.3 Near Lakeway in Travis County, gusts estimated at 85 mph or more tore the roofs off two houses and blew large trees onto homes at about 10 p.m. CDT.4
