What happened

In the late afternoon of May 9, a macroburst of thunderstorm wind cut a path 35 miles long and about 3 miles wide from the west side of Evansville, Indiana, across Warrick County to western Spencer County.1,2 Peak winds were estimated near 120 mph, and the control tower at the Evansville airport measured an 89 mph gust.1 About 100 structures were damaged and dozens destroyed in Evansville and Warrick County, most of them by falling trees. Roofing was blown off some buildings and many others had window and siding damage.1,2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $35 million in property damage in Vanderburgh County and $25 million in Warrick County, where houses, barns and a warehouse had structural damage.1,2
