What happened

On the evening of April 25, 2014, an EF3 tornado touched down west of Chocowinity in Beaufort County, North Carolina, and tracked about 21 miles east across the Pamlico River.1 Winds reached an estimated 150 mph along Whichards Beach Road, where many homes were severely damaged or destroyed, and strong EF2 damage continued for about five miles through the Washington Park area.1 An estimated 150 to 200 homes and other structures were damaged, many of them destroyed. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $15 million in property damage, 16 injuries and one indirect death.1 In Pitt County, an EF2 tornado with winds near 115 mph destroyed some mobile homes.2

The same evening, an EF2 tornado tracked from just south of Edenton through Perquimans County to northeast of Elizabeth City, damaging or destroying houses in Chowan, Perquimans and Pasquotank counties. An 11-month-old boy hurt by the tornado near Edenton died two days later.3,4,5 Earlier that afternoon, thunderstorm winds on the northwest side of Statesville blew in garage doors and stripped siding from some homes, and buildings near the city center had minor roof damage.6
