What happened

An EF4 tornado tracked across Wayne County, Nebraska, from 4:12 to 4:36 p.m. CST on October 4, 2013, and grew to nearly 1.25 miles wide.1 It missed downtown Wayne and the residential district, but numerous metal buildings in the industrial area on the east side of town, some of them large, were badly damaged or reduced to rubble.1 The tornado injured 15 people, and NOAA's Storm Events Database puts damage in the Wayne area at $50 million.1 An EF2 tornado touched down southwest of Macy in Thurston County at 4:55 p.m. and tracked through the town, leaving 6 homes heavily damaged or destroyed and 12 homes and a business with at least minor damage.2

In northwest Iowa, an EF4 tornado tracked about 23 miles across Woodbury County starting at 5:35 p.m., severely damaging or destroying about 10 houses, collapsing walls and tearing off roofs. The database lists $2 million in damage.3 Hail up to baseball size, 2.75 inches, fell near Union in Cass County, Nebraska, at 5:10 p.m. and in Mills County, Iowa, at 5:21 p.m.4,5
