What happened

On the evening of July 5, 2012, a macroburst with winds rated at 100 knots (115 mph) swept across Moulton, Alabama, damaging an area about 4 miles east to west and 3.3 miles north to south.1 It tore roofs off several buildings, partly collapsed one wall, broke out windows at businesses and snapped power poles. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $2.5 million in property damage.1 That afternoon in northwest Ohio, downburst winds over 70 mph hit Sylvania, Holland and the west and south sides of Toledo, and a station in Springfield Township measured an 89 mph gust.2 Many homes and buildings there lost roofing and siding, and a man was killed when a tree fell on his car.2

In East Tennessee, a storm complex caused significant structural damage to homes and businesses, four deaths and nine injuries.3 In Lake County, Indiana, winds estimated at 70 knots (81 mph) blew large sections of roof off two apartment buildings.4 In Monroe, North Carolina, trees fell on seven homes, four of them with major damage.5
