What happened

Isolated severe storms formed over northern North Texas late on the afternoon of June 13, 2012, and NWS Fort Worth reports hail up to 4.25 inches across, with many cars and houses badly damaged.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database says two of the storms that crossed Dallas County caused more than $1 billion in hail damage, with hail falling for 30 minutes or more in many areas.2 In the Lakewood area of Dallas, hail up to 2.75 inches fell for nearly 30 minutes, damaging the roofs of many homes, leaving holes in some, and smashing house and car windows. The database lists $900 million in property damage for that report.2 Roofs in the Swiss Avenue neighborhood of Old East Dallas took significant damage, and the database lists $200 million in property damage for that report.3

The second Dallas County storm brought tennis ball to baseball size hail to Irving and hail up to 3 inches across to Grand Prairie, then dented cars and broke windshields across Cedar Hill.4,5,6 In Collin County, hailstones of 2 to 3.25 inches fell in Parker.7 In Fannin County, 4.25-inch hail fell in Leonard. Downburst winds of 70 to 95 mph between Randolph and Leonard rolled over four manufactured homes, injuring three people, tore much of the roof off several barns, and partly tore roofs off several buildings in Randolph.8,9 A brief EF0 tornado with winds near 85 mph touched down about a mile north of Randolph.1
