What happened

On the evening of June 4, 2012, the strongest storm in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois crossed Scott County, Missouri, dropping golf ball to baseball size hail between 8 and 8:30 p.m. CDT, then producing an EF2 tornado and a downburst at Diehlstadt, according to NWS Paducah.1 Baseball size hail shattered car windows in New Hamburg.2 The downburst, with peak winds of 100 mph on a path 3.5 miles long and half a mile wide, damaged 52 homes, mostly with minor to moderate roof damage, along with several businesses and numerous outbuildings.1 The tornado, with peak winds of 115 mph at 8:44 p.m., killed three people, and several large warehouse buildings in its path lost part of their roofs.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $600,000 in property damage from the downburst and $100,000 from the tornado.3,4

Earlier, at about 1:30 p.m. EDT, golf ball to baseball size hail fell at Fort Stewart in Liberty County, Georgia, where NOAA lists $8.75 million in property damage.5 In southern Illinois, a farmer six miles north of Brookport measured a 3-inch hailstone.6 Northeast of Carter in north central Montana, 2.5-inch hail fell with winds to 70 mph, and blown-out windshields were reported.7
