What happened

On the evening of April 25, 2011, tornadoes hit several parts of central Arkansas.1 An EF2 tornado crossed 23 miles of Faulkner County. It destroyed numerous mobile homes and killed 4 people at a mobile home park, then damaged homes across much of Vilonia and businesses along U.S. Highway 64.1 The Red Cross counted about 34 houses and 62 mobile homes destroyed there. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 15 injuries and $52 million in property damage in Faulkner County.1 Another EF2 tornado, starting at 6:46 p.m. CST, crossed Little Rock Air Force Base in Pulaski County. It tore roofs off buildings, damaged or destroyed more than 135 houses in base housing and injured 4 people. The database lists $125 million in property damage for it.2 Earlier, an EF3 tornado in Garland County destroyed about 25 houses and 21 mobile homes, killed 1 person and injured 20.3

Late that evening, a Kentucky mesonet site measured a 101 mph thunderstorm gust in Calloway County. In and around Murray, the wind damaged a number of buildings, destroyed an industrial warehouse and blew trees onto houses.4 Just after midnight CST, an EF3 tornado struck the Fort Campbell Army Airfield in Christian County, Kentucky. It destroyed one structure and blew in large doors rated for 115 to 144 mph winds on several heavy buildings.5 In north and east Texas, hail reached tennis ball size, 2.5 inches, near Stony in Denton County and at Fairfield in Freestone County.6,7
