What happened

At midday on April 24, 2010, a tornado touched down west of Tallulah, Louisiana, and stayed on the ground for 149 miles as it crossed into central Mississippi.1 On the south side of Yazoo City it reached EF4 strength with winds near 170 mph and a width of 1.75 miles, destroying several buildings, then heavily damaged or destroyed many homes on the city's southeast side.1 In Choctaw County, just east of French Camp, it nearly flattened three well-built brick homes, and farther along its path it destroyed dozens of mobile homes and homes on foundations.2 The tornado killed 10 people, 5 in Choctaw County, 4 in Yazoo County and 1 in Holmes County, and injured 146.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $140 million in property damage in Yazoo County, $90 million in Choctaw County, $60 million in Holmes County and $35 million in Madison Parish, Louisiana.1,2,3,4

That evening an EF3 tornado crossed Marshall County, Alabama, badly damaging many homes and several large retail buildings in Albertville and injuring 35 people.5 The database lists $14 million in damage from that tornado in Marshall County.5 Late that night an EF4 tornado with 170 mph winds destroyed several manufactured homes northeast of Collinsville in DeKalb County, Alabama.6 In the afternoon, hail from quarter to softball size, up to 4.5 inches, fell around Henderson, Tennessee.7
