What happened

After crossing the northwestern Bahamas, Nicole made landfall at Vero Beach, Florida, at 2:45 a.m. EST on November 10, 2022, as a Category 1 hurricane with 65-knot (75 mph) winds.1 NHC judged it unlikely that hurricane conditions reached any part of the Florida coast, and the highest gust measured along the Florida east coast was 65 knots (75 mph) at New Smyrna Beach.1 Weakened to a tropical storm, it came ashore again at Cedar Key around 2 p.m. EST and near the mouth of the Aucilla River around 7 p.m.1

Gauges measured water 3 to 4 feet above the normal high tide line from Jupiter Inlet, Florida, to St. Simons Island, Georgia, and an NHC surge model puts flooding on Florida's northeast coast at up to 5 feet above ground.1 Surge and beach erosion caused extensive damage from the landfall area north to Jacksonville, including to beachfront buildings at Wilbur-by-the-Sea, south of Daytona Beach.1 The Volusia County Property Appraiser's first estimate, reported November 12, put damage in the county above $481 million, $370.3 million of it in Daytona Beach Shores.2 Building inspectors ordered two dozen multistory condo buildings in Daytona Beach Shores and New Smyrna Beach evacuated.2 NHC reports no known tornadoes, no direct deaths and five indirect deaths in Florida, and NOAA estimates $1 billion in damage.1
