What happened
Hanna made landfall on Padre Island, Texas, around 5 p.m. CDT on July 25, 2020, as a Category 1 hurricane with 80-knot (92 mph) winds and a central pressure of 973 mb, less than three days after forming in the central Gulf of Mexico.1 About 75 minutes later, the eye made a second landfall at the same strength on the mainland in eastern Kenedy County, about 12 miles north-northwest of Port Mansfield.1
A coastal station near Rincon del San Jose measured a gust of 90 knots (104 mph), and gusts reached 55 knots (63 mph) at Harlingen and 52 knots (60 mph) at McAllen's airport.1 The highest storm surge was 6.24 feet at Bob Hall Pier in Corpus Christi, and water reached 3 to 5 feet above ground along parts of Corpus Christi, Nueces and Aransas bays.1 Rain totaled 6 to 12 inches across South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley, peaking at 15.49 inches near Santa Rosa in Cameron County.1 Rain and poor drainage left 18 inches to 4 feet of water in many areas from Santa Rosa and La Feria to east of Edinburg, and around Mission, La Joya and Sullivan City.2 Five EF0 tornadoes touched down in South Texas, mostly downing trees and causing minor structural damage.1
NWS Brownsville reports hundreds of poorly built homes and other structures damaged, mostly roofs but also siding and walls, and dozens of buildings in colonias left uninhabitable.2 In Nueces County, surge flooded several buildings in Corpus Christi and damaged some public facilities.1 NHC counts no direct deaths in the United States and five indirect deaths in Texas. NCEI estimates Hanna caused more than $1.1 billion in damage in the United States.1
