What happened

Barry, which formed over the northern Gulf of Mexico, made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane around 10 a.m. CDT (1500 UTC) on July 13, 2019, on a remote stretch of the Louisiana coast about 10 nautical miles east-southeast of Pecan Island.1 Its winds were 65 knots (75 mph), and it fell to tropical storm strength by 1 p.m. CDT as its center passed near Intracoastal City.1

Water rose 4 to 6 feet above ground along the central Louisiana coast in and around Vermilion and Atchafalaya Bays, and a gauge near Eugene Island measured a 6.13-foot storm surge.1 Inundation of 2 to 4 feet reached the southeastern Louisiana coast and the shore from Vermilion Bay west to Calcasieu Lake.1 The strongest gust measured over land was 57 knots (66 mph) at Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia.1 Rain totaled 10 to 15 inches across much of south-central and southwestern Louisiana and peaked at 23.58 inches near Ragley.1 Dozens of homes in Calcasieu Parish had major flooding, and many homes and businesses in St. Mary Parish had wind damage.1 NHC reports no deaths, and NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information estimates about $600 million in damage, mostly in Louisiana and mostly from flooding.1
