What happened

After crossing Nicaragua and Honduras as a tropical storm, Nate made its first US landfall at the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana at about 7 p.m. CDT on October 7, 2017, as a Category 1 hurricane with 75-knot (86 mph) winds.1 It made its final landfall near Biloxi, Mississippi, at about 12:20 a.m. CDT on October 8 with 65-knot (75 mph) winds.1

NHC estimates storm surge flooding of 6 to 9 feet above ground along much of the Mississippi coast and the Alabama coast west of Mobile Bay, reaching about 9 feet near Biloxi and Ocean Springs.1 Water reached 4 to 7 feet above ground in Mobile Bay, 3 to 5 feet in southeast Louisiana north and east of the river mouth, and 2 to 4 feet along the Florida Panhandle.1 In Biloxi, 3 to 4 feet of water flooded the ground-floor parking garages of several casinos, and in Jackson County, Mississippi, the surge caused minor flooding in 15 to 20 homes or businesses.2,3 In Alabama, about 25 houses on the west end of Dauphin Island flooded, several houses in Bayou La Batre, Coden and along the Dog River took 2 to 3 feet of water inside, and just under 200 piers were damaged in Baldwin County.4 A shipyard in Pascagoula measured a 71-knot (82 mph) gust, and Mobile Regional Airport measured a 66 mph gust.1,4 Nate produced 16 tornadoes in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina, all rated EF0 or EF1.1 NHC reports no direct US deaths and two indirect deaths from traffic accidents, and cites an NCEI estimate of $225 million in US damage to property and agriculture.1
