What happened

Edna passed Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on September 10, 1954, and made landfall over Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the next day.1 NHC's best track gives it sustained winds of 95 knots (109 mph) and a central pressure of 950 mb at its first landfall point at 1830 UTC (1:30 p.m. EST) on September 11.2

Martha's Vineyard reported a peak gust of 120 mph, and gusts of 80 to 100 mph hit much of the rest of the area Edna crossed.1 NHC counts 20 deaths and $40 million in damage in the United States from Edna.1
